And BOACs first 3 aircraft were delivered with sextants. BOAC apparently didnt fully trust the autopilot.

That BOAC blue/white scheme did look good but maybe I am dwelling on nostalgia. Did they still retain the Speedbird throughout the BA era?

AFAIK the speedbird has never been dropped, although the design has changed. And during exercise LIONHEART in 84 all the BA flights used SPEEDBIRD as their callsign.

What was exercise LIONHART? Speedbird is still the callsign for all BA flights.

LIONHEART was the largest exercise in West Germany by British Forces. The vast majority of the re-inforcements were flown to Gutersloh on BA 747s, and a few BA Tristars. There was a picture taken from the tower of 2 747s and 2 BA Tristars in fron of the air terminal.

On the Channel 5 documentary on the 747 they mentioned that the 747-300 could carry 650 passengers, did it ever carry that many?

All Nippon (ANA) operated a short range version of the 747 on domestic routes within Japan with seating of around 520.

Wasnt the crash in Japan in 85 one of those 747s? IIRC its the worlds worst aviation disaster.

In 1985. A very full account of the accident is on Wiki, caused by a botched repair by Boeing which resulted in decompression, damage and the aircraft became uncontrollable. 520 fatalities. Japanese Airlines not ANA.

Four people survived that crash, the pilots struggled for about half an hour to control the aircraft.
