Paul Nash photo - Harwell? was created by Wellyboot
Hi,
I came across the series of photos by Paul Nash from 1940 on the Tate website - www.tate.org.uk/art/archive , showing aircraft, a few airfield structures and the Cowley aircraft dump. The photo in the following link is one of a group from the same location which must I think be an OTU - Wellingtons, Ansons and the tail end of a Moth. The title locates it as Harwell(?), but the airfield recognition code under the windsock is a Y, if indeed it is a windsock mast - it looks rather short to me?

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite

Interesting photo Peter, and welcome to the group.
The 'Y' is in fact a 'T' and it indicates the direction for landing on the airfield.
The station ID 'HW' would be in a separate box close to this signals square.
The mast is not a windsock support. It is discussed HERE.

What a fantastic collection of photos. Some very interesting shots in there. Anyone care to explain this one? I assume the globe was to make it visible from the cockpit?

Surprised that no one has said most of those pics were taken at Abingdon and not Harwell, the clue being the type 'A's and a type 'C' plus off course the watch office.
