Help identifying an RAF base in Kent

16 Apr 2011 13:33 - 18 Mar 2018 00:08 #1 by PJK
Hello all,

1st post here and would be grateful for any help in identifying which R.A.F base this is referring to:

"between the a.m (Air Ministry) & R.A.F *****"

Its an extract from a letter dated 1941 and I believe that it could be referring to an RAF base on the North Kent coast but I can't fathom out which one.

It looks to me like RAF UNITS

I agree with that; Units; so non-specific.

Thanks for the help chaps. "Units" now looks obvious and fits in with context of the letter.

Now for the hard part...identifying the RAF Unit or Units involved!

Kind Rgds

Peter

North Kent coast really points at Manston; there was not another RAF Unit in that area as far as I know.

Somewhere on the Isle of Sheppey? Eastchurch or Leysdown perhaps?

I think that RAF Gravesend could be the most Northerly base in Kent.

I was reacting to the OP's statement that it was/is a North Kent coast unit.

I feel a definition of coast debate looming :)

According to the Coast TV series anything tidal is coastal, although to say Teddington is on the coast stretches the normally accepted view of coast. Gravesend did have a beach from which people bathed also a promenade.
I suppose the question is what was accepted as coast at the time of the original entry. I don't know the answer to that one.
