Can I identify airfield from Dad's logbook?

27 Jul 2010 22:42 #1 by Farmer Fred
Hi, I have been looking through Dad's RCAF logbook from the time he spent training in Canada as a bomb aimer. I can't see any mention of a school or airfield, but he has recorded all the Ansons he flew in and their pilots, so I wondered if it is possible to find out the airfield from the aircraft serials?
For example, on 6th June 1944, he flew as Air Bomber in Anson 6977 piloted by F/Sgt Gillies. Many serials are given such as 6704, 6900, 8235 and so on. I just wondered if there is any way of working backwards from the numbers.
Any ideas would be gratefully received!
Thanks,
Fred

I would assume it's theoretically posible, depending on how many record cards you have to work with.
All the serial numbers you list are indeed valid RCAF Anson MkI (British-built) numbers, with the exception of 8235 which was a MkII (Canadian-built).

Annoyingly, R Walker's RCAF serial lists HERE have a large gap right where most of the Ansons are. With any luck you Dad's logbook might have a serial that is covered, and then we have something to work from.

All the best,
PB

You need to obtain a copy of your dad's RAF service record where all of his postings and unit and squadron moves should be listed . See here ;

Sadly the MOD have the b****y cheek to charge you thirty quid for the privilege !

If that doesn't help try the RAF Air Historical branch - they have most of the WW2 Records and will usually provide any info they have to relatives..

Hi Fred
The Air-Britain Anson File gives all the serial numbers you mention as serving with 2 Bombing and Gunnery School, Mossbank, Saskatchewan. The only anomaly is 6704 which was not with this unit. As aircrew often noted down logbook details wrongly, it is possible that it happened with this one. So I reckon there is more than a good chance that your Dad was with 2 BGS. If you list more serials and they match up, it might clinch it!

Well remembered, Dave, I'd forgotten about that thread even after viewing it a week or so ago!

Once again, thanks one and all for your help! I thought i might try jogging my Mum's memory to see if she had heard of Mossbank, and she said "Mossbank was the name of one of your father's cows when we were first married (c1954)," so I think that clinches it.
The modern photos on the other thread are very evocative -somewhere I have a few photos of Dad larking about with the airfield buildings in the background, they might be of interest as then and now comparisons.
Thanks again, Fred
ps the war ended before dad could go operational in Europe and he was transferred to the mines (which he hated) so his time flying in Canada was very important to him.

Despite all the losses in Bomber command they still ended up with more aircrew than they knew what to do with. One of my dads brothers was put on deferred service and eventually ended up in the armoured corps.
