Checking the other threads I noticed that St Athan has 2 decoys listed at
Flemingston and Penmark, however the locals say there was only one,
located between the 2 villages at Treguff/Llanbethery Downs
Question, for those of you with better knowledge than I,
is the bunker for that site the one shown in 'Google Earth'
at 51'25"43.95N; 3'23"43.16W ?
i visited the active satellite landing ground between st Athan and the village of Wick, nothing left apart from one hangar hard standing, but i have seen an aerial shot of tens of aircraft hiding along the tree line and i heard that it was a rather busy place especially when Llandow was receiving aircraft for disposal. unsure about any decoy sites, could you post a photo of the decoy site that you have found? prehaps from google earth?
The only decoy site I have heard of for St Athan (and for Llandow) is Marcross, which lies South of Llandow.
Certainly never heard of anything at Flemingston and can't even see a suitable area there.
Rhoose (Penmark) was initially established as a SLG for Llandows 53 OTU Spitfires.
WW2nut, I think the site you are reffering to are the SW most dispersals of Llandow, they actually tracked all the way down towards Wick.
Interesting, so the GE link would be the site referred to in your posted link as Llanbethery?
It looks like it lies between Flemingston and Penmark, hence why there seems to be a Q site listed at both.
I'm sure the 'Penmark' site was the SLG that became Rhoose.
the landing ground i am on about was used by both St. Athan and Llandow and it was in St.Brides here it is in google earth, its about a mile from Llandow and 2 miles from St.Athan, it has a remaining gate house, hard standing and although its a pig farm you can see the lay of the landing areas, 2 in all one ither side of the road, the farmers parents have memories of loads of activity there during the war and it was used as part of the breaking of aircraft towards the end of the war

Ah sorry Dean, I see what you mean.
That is the SLG of St Brides and yes aircraft could be dispersed and hidden there. I've never heard of scrapping there though, would love to hear more about that.
i went to the airfield about a year ago and while roaming around the perimeter i was confronted by the farmer who was more than helpful, i already knew about the sites history but he said that his parents had told him about aircraft lined up being disassembled and lorry's coming to cart away the resulting debris? its my opinion that his parents (owning a huge swathe of land in that area) had confused the landing ground with some local dispersals, also on their land nearby and linked directly to Llandow. i could be wrong, but he was sure they were talking about the landing ground closest to the farm house, i have seen an arial photo of aircraft lining the trees but never more than a handfull were ment to have used the field. i cant find any real history for the site which in its day was said to have a robin hanagar, various nissen huts and a big guard house considering the insignificance of the site?
(ps not forgot about the literature i promised but xmas and shopping getting in the way of everything at the mo!)
