What are they talking about?

Found this infringing news item from November 1960.



I'm not sure which airfield they are referring to or if it was indeed an airfield they were referring to. Bassingham Fen bombing range was last used in the early fifties and cleared of explosives by 1956. I did think about Coleby Grange and possibly Thor but that is a stretch to refer to it as Bassingham Fen.

I wonder if the presence of RAF personnel there during the war caused locals to refer to it as "RAF Bassingham Fen" and thereby inferring an airfield to some? To the best of my knowledge bombing ranges were never prefixed with RAF, it was only post war that some became RAF stations and then only the bigger ones.

Bombing range huts tended to be Nissen or similar rectangular buildings. What would be 20ft square in plan, assuming the measurements are in the right ball park?

Was there a syllabus change to move air weapons training to OCU or similar?

I believe the Athena was equipped for practice bombing, at least according to an advert I saw, but it may have been wishful thinking on the part of the makers.
