Does anyone have any pictures or drawings of what an airfield 'Gun Post' looked like?

There are two at Polebrooke, the link is meant to take you to post 27 of the thread. I took these at least ten years ago and have not been back since so my memory of the dimensions is vague.

Thank you for that, much appreciated, but it's not what I was expecting at all. Your pic's show something that is quite substantial, whereas I thought it would just be something that a Bren attached to.

I agree these are way to big for a single Bren, I need to locate the RSP I hav e but I recall that one is marked and called a gun post. I had a quick look at the image here. www.americanairmuseum.com/sites/default/files/eh/eh-101.jpg. and both appear to be visible ion 1946.

The term 'Gun Post' refers to the complete installation which varied dependent on local terrain and ingenuity. Often a shallow circular pit with a filled sandbag perimeter wall in the centre of which was a gun mount set in concrete

The simplest version on UK airfields used to mount a Light Machine Gun such as Lewis Gun, Bren Gun was little more than a metal socket set in concrete into which a vertical tubular post was set. The LMG was mounted on top giving a 360 degree rotation and near vertical elevation.. More elaborate mounts existed.

There were mounts too for 20mm calibre guns usually Hispano or Poulsten or Oerlikon

I managed to find the exact spot of the 'Gun Post' and the attached photo's are what I found:

A pure guess, but I'd say 3ft x 3ft.

I'll go back in the next day or so and measure it up.

Thanks. I was looking at the ring of bolts probably the 'holdfast' for the gun mount implying a heavier calibre than a LMG.
