Hi,
I was walking my dog around the perimeter track at Chipping Warden and came across this iron fitting and would like to know what it is. It is approximately 14 inches in diameter and set into concrete. It is right at the end of one of the runways at the outside of the perimeter track. When I dug some of the mud out there were bits of thick clear glass in the center so I assume it is some type of light but is completely different to the Drem Mk 2 perimeter lamps that I have noticed. If you notice on the picture the are two arrows on the outside, one pointing towards the runway and the other away from the runway. There is also a couple of iron hooks which look like something may have attached at one time.
Any help to from some of you experts would be appreciated.

Most interesting There is a discrepancy in the 1944 audit of Contact Lighting - Chipping Warden's status is 'Required', i.e.it didn't have it. However if that was the case why did they then fit the obsolete earlier version and not the C3 which had been standard since 1942. Cheddington is like this. I suspect the lights had been installed at an earlier date - perhaps they weren't working by 1944.
The light you found I suspect was the runway End Bar which had four lights across the runway and then one each side in the grass 25 50 feet from the runway edge. Over the years I've searched for these off-runway fittings and have only ever found one.
