Living Accommodation Building

Folks,

I saw this building near St Angelo yesterday.

Have not seenone with the red bricked (Chimney?) before.

Believe was part of dispersed Living Quarters.

Can someone explain what this was used for please?

I was thinking a housing for a water tank (or boiler). ??????? I seem ti recall seeing a taller version on a domestic site (5 I think) at North Witham

It is at St Angelo, Enniskillen in County Fermanagh.
A short distance north of the East West Runway.

Er, Andy. St Angelo doesn't have an E/W runway......

In that case it is North of the Runway running from Right to Left as shown here.

SD722 (1955) states '...altogether a poor airfield, but it is the most westerly airfield in the British Isles, and as such may have some use.

The runways were 5,421 and 4,305 feet in length. Extensibility was almost impossible due to a large number of factors, so it's unlikely a third runway was ever planned. It never had any form of permanent electric runway lighting.

The 1942 location plan reveals that the Squires Gate Leader Beam passed right over this airfield; the Silloth leader beam passed about 5 miles to the north and the Prestwick beam ten miles to the north. These would be useful to incoming USAAF aircraft. David Smith in AS7 records that B-17s were regular visitors from the Atlantic.

It's radio facilities were VHF R/T and HEWT (whatever that is).
