Hello all,

My wife and I recently acquired an interesting old Air Ministry Stores sign, but are having absolutely no luck in researching it, and wondered whether anyone here might be able to help us with our research as we can't seem to find another one like it..

It is a metal sign measuring approximately 18 1/2" x 6" with raised letters reading "AIR MINISTRY STORES". There are 4 screw holes in the corners and it is in a deep blue paint (which is peeling somewhat) and there is a fair amount of oxidisation to the metal around the rim, and that's about as much as we know about it - I have attached some pictures here.

If anyone has any info on this lovely old sign we would love to hear it!!

Nice sign

Wiki says the AM was 1918 to 1964 when it became part of MoD, although such signage would have only have been replaced on active stations then I suppose

It might have come from a stores depot, the problem is, that an RAF stores would simply be 'Main Stores' or 'Stores', but Air Ministry Stores, implies something different. Then again a stores depot such as Milton, Kidbrooke or West Ruislip etc were huge depots with hundreds of store buildings or even hangars storing many different aircraft parts etc (not Air Ministry).

Its cast iron, which means its quite old - pre-WWII

Where did you get it from (town)?
You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!

Thanks Paul for the info- it's not actually Cast Iron though, I think it is infact cast aluminum. Does seem so unusual to be Air Ministry Stores specifically- we found it in Bristol. Any ideas?

Well there you have it, an aircraft company. When I said cast iron, I was thinking it looked just like the BAC numbered building plaques at filton. I now think it is definitely a plaque for an air ministry store at an aircraft factory, not RAF station.
You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!
