Handover of an RAF airfield to Americans. Caption in USAF history book: "The AAF Officially Takes Over RAF Airdrome, December 1942". Anyone know where this was taken?

Top one is Thurleigh (published before?) I think. Not sure about the others yet.

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!

The picture of the gilders was I reckon taken at one of the 9th air force bases, so that narrows it down slightly!!

Im fairly certain its not Barkston Heath.

Is the hangar in the second a Butler? Looks like an external frame. Don't recognise the Waco glider upacking area but as canberra says it is more than likely a 9th AF base. Greenham or Aldermaston perhaps?

Greenham Common comes to mind, especially with that 2nd pic. They did a lot of glider assembly there. I *think* I've seen that picture before.

*edit* Yeah, the pictures on this page seem very similar: www.pointvista.com/WW2GliderPilo ... sembly.htm

Regarding the glider unpacking photo - there is a large manor-like structure at the top left-center ('centre' ) that might spark someone's memory. I think that that and the location of the hangar should be identifiable from period photographs. Also, it could have been an Air Depot also rather than an Airfield at which these gliders were located for this photograph.

Just read an excellent book on gliders in the USAAF during the war called "Silent ones : World War II invasion glider test & experiment : Clinton County Army Air Field, Wilmington, Ohio." By: Charles L Day. Wilmington is, coincidentally, my hometown. Day states that the Waco glider (CG-4A) was shipped using five crates. The shipping weight was 26,000 pounds. The glider itself weighed only 3500 lbs! That's a lot of packing material.

I dont think its an airfield at all, it might be Station 429 at Crookham Common, near Greenham Common?

Crookham Common had a single Butler Hangar according to the 26MRRS history.

I think you're correct! On the website you mention above is the following photograph:

I believe the hangar in the distance is the one at the right of the photograph posted at the top of this thread.

Also, it looks like the tow plane (C-47) is doing a double tow of two CG-4As.

Now - a question about Greenham Common / Crookham Common. A search for both places in Google Earth takes to me to opposite ends of the same disused airfield! Are they the same place?
