ON-LINE MAPS - Accurate NGR? was created by PETERTHEEATER

Since I often want to locate a UK place using NGR I tend to go to an on-line map site such as STREET MAP but I have serious doubts as to the accuracy of the search results.

Can anyone recommend an on-line map site that they find accurate in respect of NGR input?

I would suggest Geograph of the O/S get a map service - I hav always had doubts with streetmap too, I also find streetmap outdated now, if you look at sites like google maps then they have the map and satalite coverage too.

Have you tried this? www.earthtools.org/ When viewing the UK it can show NGR's. You have to select the "Location" tab. I can't vouch for accuracy as my real maps are in the loft and it's cold!!

Very true. I found it much easier to use earthtools to line up the crosshairs and take the reading move the photo take the reading etc. I'll probably be told they use the same data as Streetmap! Maybe I should crosscheck with OS on the first reading?

or do what I used to do, pop into WH Smith and look at the real full bodied, yet lithe and so responsive to the touch real thing

Alas no WH Smith and how I long for those cloth backed 1 inch sheets or the "expendible" D survey sheets my old dad used to nick.

www.multimap.co.uk allows you to view both OS maps and aerial photos of a site. You have to zoom out a fair bit to get the OS map option tho.
