HISTORIC ENGLAND AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS - NEED HELP

12 May 2024 09:24 #1 by PETERTHEEATER
This is the HE Aerial Photographs website:

historicengland.maps.arcgis.com/apps/web...mobileBreakPoint=300

I want to view the RAF and USAAF verticals in a specific area but I cannot turn off the HE Vertical layer which is a mass of Green Rectangles  to get at the Yellow RAF images underneath. Most frustrating.

I have tried the Help on the LH Toolbar and tried every combination in the Layers menu in top RH corner but to no avail.

The area I want to view is Little Staughton.

Has something changed? I could independently activate/deactivate RAF and USAAF before but not now.

Can anyone help?

I don't recall being able to turn off RAF/USAAF and modern HE photos independently, only the obliques or verticals as a block. Having said that I don't think I ever tried. There were some issues a few days ago when the available frame thumbnails didn't appear and therefore couldn't be opened but this evolved into a long delay before frames appeared a day or so later. That seems okay now.

With the number of frames in some areas, especially London, I just click on a point in my area of interest and cycle through the 20+ frames for that point, frustrating if the Greens have taken over though.

It would be good if you could isolate coverage to selected types of vertical and oblique.

I also understand NCAP is due to release a new interface later this month, or the next. Hopefully they will add a location search.

Thanks Peter,

yesterday I was unable to open 'thumbnails'.

A new release? Good, perhaps that will solve my issue, meanwhile, I shall scroll through the masses of images offered and see if I can isolate those I want.

EDIT: Again, today, thumbnails will not open,

There is a two second delay on the thumbnails opening for me today but it was 6-8 seconds the other day. The other change is that Windows 10 updated without me knowing around that time. Not sure if that is relevant though. Have you tried other browsers?

I use to be able to work these sort of problems out in the days of DOS and early Windows but they have made things "user friendly" now, so only experts stand a chance of solving these issues.
