OLD MAPS WEBSITE - CLOSURE

I wonder how many subscribers they managed to get?

I never saw the subscription view but never had faith in the site because of the number of errors I saw, you could not trust the dates they used and of course you could not view the actual dates on the maps.

I subscribed for a number of years as I used it all the time. Yesterday I got an email from PayPal saying my regular payments have been stopped by Landmark. A quick look didn't show today's screen and I didn't fully read the screen it did show but it sounded like it was continuing as of yesterday but limiting the number of tiles to each user. You can't see the tiles so it was a bit pointless. Oddly enough I was going to cancel anyway as it was over £100 pa and the website was so slow that often screens wouldn't complete.

This will be a great loss for the post 1970 maps where most of the airfields and other "secret" sites are actually shown. Prior to this only some were shown. The OldMaps site als had far more large scale maps (more detail) covering all periods compared to the NLS offer which only shows what they had.

I suspect the other big Landmark offer, Promap, will still be available to professional users and all that digitisation will be solely used by Promap. I'm did think there might be a sub only offer for researchers but it seems not. I also think the biggest problem was that some users were downloading vast amounts of maps at the zoom levels that were free and hogging the bandwidth.

I wonder how I will get maps of sites that we have occasionally focused on like ammunition depots and Bofor towers, most of which were not on the NLS offering?
