Misleading Maps

Having spent some time going over old documents and files I have accumulated one aspect of old maps and charts struck me as a problem for the unwary or those taking them in isolation. A number of features have been marked on maps that never existed but were planned but shelved for whatever reason. A few that spring to mind are:

1) The housing plans for Manston pre WW1 where the road layout is shown.
2) The housing plan for Leysdown pre WW1 where the road layout is shown.
3) The marking of Kell's Point on an airfields map when it never went ahead.
4) The marking of Penhale bombing ranges on charts when they never went ahead.

The reason for them being marked is understandable due to the long lead time between major updates to maps and charts. There must be other anomalies, like pre-war housing schemes that stalled due to the war and this includes the street where I was brought up which was supposed to have a row of houses on the other side of the road but it became allotments instead, and still is, as far as I know.

The update system also gave me one oddity which went the other way. During WW2 all danger areas were no longer marked on Admiralty Charts, only physical obstructions like buoys and targets, however for some reason Duddon Sands bombing range remained neatly outlined for much of the war.
