The first time that it happened (See my OP below) I was using Search from the GE programme. When the view shifted to the requested location all Placenames were 'blacked out' Restarting the programme fixed it.
This time, I used one of my saved KML files for the Wick bomb store. The view shifted there and my Placenames showed normally. I then clicked on a hyperlink to the Defence of Britain which I had saved in the details of my Placename and viewed info there. When I clicked to return to Google Earth the Placenames were blacked out.
