Deep in the archives of the RAF Museum in Hendon are the remains of an identity card. It bears the photograph of a young pilot who like many of his wartime generation had sprouted a pencil thin moustache in an attempt to persuade the airfield ground crews he was older than his 23 years.

As usual, emphasis on the 'Spitfire' with no mention of the 'Hurricane'

Re the photo of the Hurricanes at the head of the article, "A group of RAF pilots scramble to their planes." Includes five sailors!

From word association the general public would assume they are Spitfires.

Not wishing to do the Hurricane down, but I think Jeremy Clarkson got it right when he said the Spitfire was the most beautiful machine ever made.

I suspect they are Sea Hurricanes and there are five parachuted naval pilots plus ground crew to strap the pilot in or help start up. Probably not 1940 but later as I thought the naval fighter pilots were seconded to the RAF during the Battle of Britain.

I thought they might be Sea Hurricanes but can't see an arrester hook. Perhaps they didn't need one?

I think the photo is one from the archives and no one has bothered to check it out!!!
For what its worth BBC north west did an item on the closure of Woodford and had film of Lancasters, only problem was they were Halifaxes!

I don't think the land based training units Hurricanes had arrester hooks. They may have only been intended for CAM ships.
