Can anyone tell me whether there is a website / source that lists the memorials / plaques / monuments located throughout the UK honouring the bomber crews that did not return.
The most comprehensive database of War Memorials is on the
IWM website
. I used to send them details but gave up because of lack of feedback.
There are various websites listing War Memorial, but most are poorly organised.
I concentrate on adding to the RCAHMS / HES Canmore because if I find an unlisted on then I can usually get them to add it reasonably quickly and I can update directly with information and photographs.
Each of the historical counties in the forum has a memorials section, but often the detail is recorded as a photo so is not searchable, like these at East Kirkby
Note that both of these sources are not exclusively Bomber Command
On a visit to the new memorial in Lincoln, they were telling us that they had been validating the Bomber Command Rolls of Honour from Lincoln Cathedral and l think York as well and had found significant anomalies. Definitions of what an operation was, or when it started had changed during the war, there had been mis recordings including men found to be still alive.
It may not be 55,573 after all!
Then there is the issue of bomber crews who operated from Egypt on European targets as highlighted by the Bomber Command clasp
The memorial at Lincoln has already panels in place for those lost from Lincolnshire, and plan to add those from Yorkshire and Norfolk in a later phase
Eventually they will have covered all the individuals and this should be accessible, but how much detail would be attached to each record I have no idea
Thanks for the replies. I was asked by a friend in Canada who is a RCAF historian, who I'll now get in touch with.
Kevin - thanks for the AIX listings, which I note the memorial some friends and I arranged in 2013 here in Colchester isn't included. Any chance of adding it?
Crew of Lancaster UM-K2 serial DV177 - memorial pillar located Ipswich Rd Colchester.
The IWM I have to agree were not very efficient at the corrections I sent them regarding our memorial.
