CARNABY - Operation FIDO Memorial

Hot off the press !

Plans are in hand to place a memorial on the site of the wartime airfield and a committee is being formed and volunteers are being asked to come forward to help . Have 'we' any ARG/AiX members in east Yorkshire willing to help ?

Coincidently the ABCT will be unveiling one of their memorials at Carnaby on Friday 1st August followed by Binbrook on the 2 August and Hemswell on the 3rd . Just a clash of dates , possibly ?

Probably best not to site the FIDO memorial too close to the Bannerman one... It's rather too easy to upstage the nondescript Indian granite blocks...

Hope the fundraising day goes well, it sounds like good value so should be well attended with luck.

I emailed a copy of the ABCT circular to the 'real' Carnaby memorial committee via the parish council and their reply is as follows ;

"Thank you for your email and your support. We need all the support that we can so thank you for le tting us know and for spreading the word. We have now set up a committee, which we have called Carnaby Airfield Committee. We are raising money for a memorial and are holding various events, such as a Family Fun Day on the 2nd August, a Blackout Night (pie and pea supper under blackout conditions with candlelights) and a Xmas lunch 1940’s style at Ferns Farm Hotel. We have a copy of an original menu that was served at RAF Carnaby for Christmas 1944.

I then received a second email from the parish council regards the ABCT ;

"Mr Bannerman contacted the Parish Council some time ago when he found out that we were wanting to put up a memorial. At the time we had no objections but have not heard from his since. We informed him that we were putting up a memorial. I am unsure as to where he is putting the memorial as I have not heard where there is as permissions are needed as most of the ind est is in private or council hands. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I will look into this further. Many thanks."
