Downed German Bomber in County Down

I have heard that a German Bomber came down between Bangor and Donaghadee in 1941.

I believe the aircraft crashed due to mechanical difficulties rather than action and was part of the force which raided Belfast.

The location of the crash was supposed to be in a field between the 4 Road Ends Junction and 6 Road Ends Junction.

The aircraft was guarded whilst on the ground for a few days before being removed.

I would be very interested to learn more about this or any other crash in Northern Ireland for inclusion on my website.

Hello ww2ni. I havn'nt heard about that incident but here are some i do know about.

A Focke - Wulf Condor belonging to 1st Staffel of Kampfgeschwader 40 (I/KG40) crashed on the 25th of July 1940 whilst on a minelaying sortie at the mouth of Belfast Lough. Three survivors were picked up by a anti-submarine trawler and landed at Larne, no bodies are on record as being recovered.

two JU290's shot down off the West of Ireland in February 1944.
One was shot down by a Wildcat operating from HMS Biter anescort carrier and the second by S/Ldr Jim Wright of 235 Squadron , a native of Belfast.
Wright was over at St. Angelo on detachment from Portreath with a number of 235 Squadron's Beaufighters giving aircover to Convys which had been increasingly under threat from the Luftwaffe who attacked them with HS-293 "Glider bombs".
