The National Picture Theatre on Beverley Road in Hull is believed to be the last remaining ruin of a civilian building from the Blitz in Britain . It was hit at 10pm on March 17th 1941. Incredibly all 150 people inside survived when a parachute mine exploded at the other end of the cinema; they had been unable to leave when the air raid alert sounded, so sheltered in the strengthened lobby of the building .

The building has been bought by Hull Council but funds need to be found to stabilise the structure and then develop the site . Story here ;

I went in there in the early 1980s, thought it was unique even back then. I will post up the pics when I find them.

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!

Just out of interest the proprietor was Hull Cinemas Ltd. In the early 1920's the manager was E Knapp. There were two changes weekly and prices were 5d to 1s 3d. It had a seating capacity of 1,050. There was also the Rialto Picture Theatre and the Strand Picture Theatre in Beverley Road out of a total of 27 cinemas in 1921. Source: Kinomatograph Yearbook 1921 (ARG archives).

We have six Kino books, and can answer questions on most UK cinemas
