Memorial Cairn for Corporal James Hendry G.C. of the Royal Canadian Engineers

CAMELON CANADIAN KILLED ON SERVICE
Intimation has been received in Falkirk of the death on service of Corporal James Hendry, of the Royal Canadian Engineers. Corporal Hendry, who was 29 years of age, was a mining engineer at Little Long Lac, Ontario, Canada, and a son of Mr and Mrs M. J. Hendry, of Little Long Lac, who at one time were well known in Camelon, where they were born. Mr M. J. Hendry, who is a foreman mechanic in the gold mines at Little Long Lac, emigrated to Canada with his wife in 1914. Mr M. J. Hendry’s father for many years conducted a grocery business in Glasgow Road, Camelon, but is now in Canada.

Tried to Prevent Explosion
The posthumous award of the George Cross to Corporal James Hendry, Corps of the Royal Canadian Engineers, is announced, for most conspicuous gallantry in carrying out hazardous work in a very brave manner.”
Hendry was killed by an explosion he tried to prevent, after warning others to take cover.

THE posthumous award of the George Cross to Corporal James Hendry, of the Royal Canadian Engineers, was also announced last night.
Hendry was in charge of a tunnelling shift when fire broke out in the powder magazine. He warned others to take cover and, instead of doing so himself, tried put out the fire.
