Thanks for your reply, when were you at Boscombe? I'm not sure when my Dad started at Beaulieu - his memory's not what it was - but at some point during his service there they realised he didn't have a flying log, and the only one they could find was a Pilot's Log. Entries in there are 1947/8 and mainly relate to glider towing trials (Hamilcar, Horsa, & Olympia with Halifax, Hastings, Valetta, & Auster), but he was also involved in mail pick-ups with n Anson and field gun drops from the Halifax. Do you have anything on this?

BeaulieuBoy, Having worked in the section at the A&AEE Boscombe Down which was the descendant of the AFEE I have a number of the official reports written about the trials conducted at Beaulieu.

I live near Beaulieu airfield and am doing a project at the moment with my son to research it.
It's been great reading your intro.

The former bomb store is virtually obliterated but the remains of one HE Bomb Store to AM Drawing 3164/42 can be seen in Google Earth Street View. See arrow indicated on the attached snip:

Since it is my pet subject I thought I would add the bombing target about 500 yards WSW of the western end of the east-west runway (see Google Earth image from 2014 below). As far as I recall this isn't mentioned in any Beaulieu history, probably because it is not really visible until you zoom in close on GE. It was also probably assumed to be an ancient ring system, similar to those around it, but as it was not there in early 1943 this is unlikely, although some of the younger generations would probably regard 1943 as ancient!
I believe it was added some time in 1943 by one of the resident units as the earliest it appears on aerial photos is April 1944. It looks to be more USAAF than RAF, although the Fleet Air Arm adopted a similar style target in 1945/6 for camera bombing.
