RAF Brat

Hi All,

Iam an an ex-raf brat, Scaley Brat if you prefer, my Dad was with the RAF from 1942 until 1973 with a short demob time from 46-48. I have a fascination with airfields where we lived. I arrived on this mortal coil in 1953 when he was at Waddington with 61/144 squadron. Though my favourite was the married quarters and the old airfield at St Eval where we lived from 62-64 and 67-70.

I am ex RAF air traffic and whilst stationed at St Mawgan was in married quarters at St Eval, where I spent three years before buying my own place here in North Cornwall. I was in Wellington Road.

32 years later and I find myself back at the airfield now known as Newquay Airport.

Mum and Dad planned to buy a place in Cornwall.They looked at many properties in 1970 as the next posting was due to be his last. Then he was offered 'Air Crew Expert Status' and would stay in for a further 5 years to 1978 with his last 5 at at GCHQ at Cheltenham so they put it off until nearer the time. Sadly, Dad had a stroke in Bahrain 1971 while on a detachment with 90 squadron when he was an AEO electronics instructor at Topcliffe. Bang went the career extension. So they ended up settling in North Yorks instead.
