MF/DF Stations Comber and Craigantlet was created by ChrisClaydon
Good morning, ARG. I am trying to detail my father's career. He left the RN in 1935 and got a job as a telegraphist at RAF Mildenhall. He was called up in 1939 and sent to Freetown to work in a direction finding station based on a ship in the harbour. He caught malaria and was invalided back home. He was then sent to RNAS Donibristle, Fife where he stayed until the end of the war. He was then sent to RAF Lakenheath for about 2 years.
We then moved to Northern Ireland and lived in Newtownards. It was always thought my Dad worked at a D/F station at Comber but just recently I see that there was another MF/DF station at Craigantlet, between Hollywood and Newtownards.
Does anyone have any information about these 2 stations which could help me "prove", which one my Dad was based at?

Thanks
Chris Claydon

Thanks and welcome to ARG.

I have copied your message to some friends who research the Y Service so will let you know if they know any more.

There is a good website on NI in WWII

ww2ni.webs.com/

He has some pictures of what is left of the site at

Not got my lists handy but I have been told that Comber DF was associated with Gilnahirk which was the main RSS site in Northern Ireland.

The book on Gilnahirk has a list of some of the people who worked there - can't see a Claydon but it is not a complete list.

I have an appointment at theRAF museum at Hendon next week. I hope to have some more information thereafter.
Nothing to do with "y" stations.
