Leamington's WW1 Aerodrome precisely mapped

!. All the mapping is by Ordnance survey and out of crown copyright . 2.,I have just bought O.S. sheet 82 of the inch to mile popular edition this states its was 1st published in 1919 and does not state that there are any full or partial revisions. to my suprise in grid square C12 it shows the aerodrome marked as such with  Just one hangars)at the  range of buildings (I assume hangars)interestingly a Cassini reprint   including this sheet does not show anything at the site  the next map is the one in.ch to mile New Popular edition 1st published 1946 fully revised 1930 with later corrections .the grid square which contains the aerodrome is 33 61 this shows what probably was the post second world war buildings at the site some of which are still present. the final mapping is a first series series 2 and a half inch to the mile sheet SP36 which was compiled from 6 inch sheets last fully revised 1903 to 23 with systematic revision 1938 to 50 .  Tit seems very hard to locate the precise location ofWW1 aerodromes perhaps some such as Heron field might show on Popular sheets surveyed but not revised .One must always bear in mind maps are not plans and what is shown may not have existed at the time of printing but must have been present at some time before the final revision and the absence of a previously mapped feature does not necessarily mean it was no longer present but only that it was no longer mapped .

In the photo you can make out a dark strip which might be the WW" landing strip just above it and parallel is a lighter strip might this have been the WW1 strip at the the base of the strip there are a few small buildings which allowing for mapping having to show small buildings as larger than they actually are might of been from the WW1 aerodrome .Possibly one can make out darker field markings beneath the then contemporary features .
