VICKERS WORKS
Ultimate Concentration Near Swindon
Planning approval in principle has been given to proposals by Vickers- Armstrongs Ltd. to concentrate at South Marston, near Swindon, its air-craft activities, which at present are spread over three counties. The approval was reported to the County Council at its meeting on Tuesday by the Town and Country Planning Committee.
The Company is at present carrying on its aircraft work in small factories dispersed over Hampshire and Berkshire, as well as the one in Bradley Road. Trowbridge.

It appears to be enamelled brass suggesting it is not aviation related but for a ground use item such as machinery, stationary engine, lifting, artillery, AFV etc. Assuming VA did not use a 'block' system for assigning serial numbers the production run of the attached end-item ran to at least 31,000. Something portable possibly military.

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!

I would say its a id plate for a piece of plant such as a milling machine. Plant such as this were loaned by the government, either British made or Lease Lend. Either way everything was well documented. We have one two of these in the archive, though not Vickers Armstrongs at South Marston. Mostly DHE.

100% Agree with Paul on this one. Having worked at an ex Vickers plant (Brooklands) All machinery was serial numbered like this.
