Apart from a period from 1941 to 1946 when Nos 100 and 550 Sqdns with Lancasters and 142 Sqdn with Wellingtons operated from there.

Previously Grimsbys Municipal Aerodrome the Air Ministry commenced the construction of the concrete runways in June 1940, the civil license expired on the 31st August
The station started operating in Summer 1941 while construction continued .
Operations were initilaly by Wellingtons of 142 Squadron and from December 1942 by Lancasters of 100 Sqn, followed by 550 Sqn being formed from C Flight in December 1943
Flying ceased around VE Day and some use was made of the airfields hangars as overflow by 35 MU for disposal of surplus and other material, 16 men commanded by a Flt Lt, after which the site reverted to the previous owners
There was a little ATC glider flying in 1949/50. All RAF use of Waltham ended in January 1953

Temporary in the sense the buildings were wooden, TBC, and nissen huts and the land was requisitioned for war service as opposed to the permanent construction of the RAF's expansion period airfields like Waddington, Scampton and Leconfield
