Has anyone managed to find their way around the bomb damage maps/records. I'm wading through treacle at the moment, and I suspect the responses are slowed down by the fact the sites are busy.
My immediate challenge is regarding Thomas Lothian who I believe died outside Nell Gwynn House in Sloane Avenue, London on 12 February 1945. I found a bombing map that shows the building opposite having incurred serious bomb damage in 1945, but it doesn't help me with the date. Can anyone help me with finding for sure if there was a bombing raid that impacted Sloane avenue on 12 February 1945.
Hi Ian,
Is this the area you are referring to? the LCC mapping shows the buildings where seriously Damaged- Doubtful if repairable. The LCC maps only detail the damage done, not when, for that you need to look at either the bomb Census mapping or the ARP bomb survey report (BS2).
I have attached a clip from a Bomb Census Map detailing 'night bombing up to 7th Oct 1940' (TNA Ref: HO193/12/005). this shows a bomb impact which corelates to the LCC bomb damage map, however, that's not to say the site wasn't hit on multiple occasions.
Hope that helps
