Observation from a couple of years activity on the forum.
I found that links to news paper articles that I posted a few years back no longer go to the original article and now default to the news print home page.
As these no longer have any relevance to the thread topic I delete them as they would confuse anybody reading them today.
For myself, knowing that over time these external stories disappear, when I link to an article, i try to either summarise or quote the relevant information, so when it does go the link can remain as an attribution.
The problem with deleting posts with broken links is if course that the following conversations become less meaningful or even meaningless
Are you deleting posts or just the broken links in the posts?
Of course the same applies to external photo links, but that is a whole different can of worms....
I suspect it depends on the newspaper, I am sure I have followed old links of mine elsewhere and they went to the newspaper article.
What does catch me out sometimes with images here is that I put them in a temporary folder whilst I edit them, them remove the copy when I have finished with them. If I edit a post with an image then it seems to try and reload the images so they disappear from the post.
I try to avoid using current newspaper articles / images, normally I will post older ones from the BNA. These are allowed provided the copyright notice is included.
All the links to English Heritage references will no longer work, due to the re-branding, and I have found that over half the links I stored for my bombing range research do not work anymore.
Newspaper sites are a pain, mainly for the thousands of ads on a single page and banal links at the bottom, but I too have come a cropper with links to old news articles. I used to save the relevant web page as a PDF but this doesn't seem to work as well as the old days, before fancy coding. However, I gather the new Firefox can de-crapify web pages for printing so maybe it will work again soon?
No Amount Of Evidence Will Ever Persuade An Idiot (probably not Mark Twain)
Kevin ~ I read the following posts from other contributors or users to see if my post contributed in any way to their following discussions and if my original post had no impact on the thread ~ only then do I delete it.
Because not knowing the subject matter at all I some times ask dumb *ss questions ~ that I find were already covered in a previous post maybe up to a year ago ~ I delete those as well as they would only add bulk to the thread.
I attempt to ensure there is content or relevance in my post ~ if I can't find any then I would edit or delete to save the mods having to do it for me ~ I assumed if any one could not find some thing they would ask ?
