Minature preservation: 4mm Scale

Minature preservation: 4mm Scale was created by Able Mabel
I am building a 4mm scale diorama of the technical site at RAF Grimsby and would welcome any photographs of the following buildings, taken as early a date as possible. I started to photograph the place around 1980.

I would be interested in the large Nissen hut cluster that made up the Crew Lockers rooms and/or the Seco hutting that was in front of the Watch Office.

My thoughts behind the diorama is to preserve a small corner that was once an operational airfield and illustrate to people the kinda place these young fella's flew from and also to give a good visual on how a wartime site was.
In my view its 'preserving' the buildings in minature that were once there.

I know Elvington has a diorama of the site consisting of some ten buildings, this is in the similar vein as to my diorama but i'm going to putting it down as near i can to the actual layout, (Having to omit the 25 Yds range --now included 18/09/2017) and include many vehicles, Airfix conversions as well as a number of White-metals kits in order to show a wide variety of vehicles employed.

Having been a member of the ARG for many years previously, it has stood me in good stead for researching the types of building long gone although i have to say that Grimsby did have quite a number of buildings that survived for many years.8-)

Nice job Able Mabel.

I could cope with the model making but space to keep it all in work without disturbing the wife would be a problem. Where is your diorama set up?

The photo is of the Elvington diorama which used to be in the 'Guard room' by the main entrance but my diorama currently is TWO 8' x4' boards in the garage. The buildings are in my 'office' and i am waiting for the warmer months to start work on the dio boards, that is to say that i need some 2" x 1.5" inch battens to give them rigidity then i can hopefully make a start on the under-ground air-raid shelters which i will be sinking into the base. This LINK might give you a better understanding ...:)

It has been a while since any real progress has been seen but yesterday the weather was grand. This is the first occasion i have been able to get the three 8' x 4' boards out into the sunshine and place numerous buildings out and a number of vehicles.
The white square to the left is the board i have in the garage that needs marking out for the roadways etc. There were four Romney main workshop buildings on this section which are part constructed and a few more buildings. There are still more buildings to construct over the entire 'site' as well as air-raid shelters and vehicles. To the left of the white square there will be another 8' x 4' board that a T2 hangar will sit on, i am having this constructed by a company near by. (It is approx 3ft x 18")

There is a mixture of wooden buildings, Nissens and of course Temporary Brick Construction, (TBC) types.
Still to build half dozen blast shelters, a couple of Seco huts (R.D.F.), its slowly coming together.
By the way, the first post stated that i was going to Omit the 25 yds. firing range, well that is almost complete as well.

My small bit of preservation . . . .

I had forgotten about this! Yes, it has been quite a while but it's coming together which is more than I can say for my model aircraft!

Anyway, it's looking good and I can appreciate the work that you are putting in. I hope that you can find a permanent home for it when completed so that the general public can view it.

It really shows how much empty space there was in a wartime build. Excellent stuff.

The small Nissen in the centre is listed on the site plan as 'Stores site for'.
The aerial photograph I have confirms it construction and location.
