Little Staughton - Dispersal Naming Coonvention?

03 Sep 2024 09:11 #1 by NeilTurner
Work progresses with RAF Little Staughton flight sim model, all is complete save the cluttering, animation and video production.
The lighting system is complete except for one missing component, which is to reproduce the tin boxes which were internally lit to mark the alpha/numeric dispersal number.
LS has 4 Spectacles and 36 Frying Pans. There's no reference to this system in any of my 30+ books bought to research the project.
Can anyone give me a starter for ten on the naming convention for Bomber Command airfields please.
I seem to remember seeing a reference somewhere to the system starting in the NW then progressing clockwise to complete the circle. If there's no response I'll have to invent something, so any informed guesses would be helpful.

Following Kebecker's steer, I studied the chat and it looks like the numbering system can start in the N, S or W, include add-ins for later pans and in some cases include letters too. Bottom line, no standardised system.
I have a question in with the lead of Wyton's Pathfinder museum re Little Staughton, so will see if that yields any fruit.
Otherwise, I'm minded to start at the 12 o'clock position, giving each pan a successive number. These will be indicated in the model with the illuminated tin boxes at the entrance to each dispesal.
My model includes a number of animated static aircraft and these are indicated on the attachment, for interest. These should enhance to look, feel and realism for sim pilots. My assumption, based on Peter's comment, is 582 - as the senior partner - dispersed to the west (shorter taxi after landing?), 109, as the junior (although masters of Oboe nav), had a bit further to park up to the east.
The fly in the ointment though is an image of a 582 Lanc April '45 on the SE spectacle with para store and photo shed in the background (Bases of Bomber Command p328). BBC also shows a 109 Mozzie outside the northern T2, so I have at least 2 fixed points to work from.
LS's heritage aviation continues into the modern age, as Tom Cruise was there a month ago hanging out of biplane filming for his new Mission Impossible movie.
Life goes on.
