Bournemouth Airshow - 1910

Includes a plan of the aerodrome and a chronology titled "Brief History of first 100 years of progress"

The first entry being

1809 Sir George Cayley made a machine that would frequently lift him. He afterwards endeavoured to use a Steam Engine for motive power

The aerodrome plan is similar to the one of Farnborough on the old one inch maps. I didn't realise they were air race courses.

What is also surprising is how many aircraft manufacturers there were at that time, considering the short time since powered flight first occurred. It is almost as if everyone was working to the same timetable and would have all got there at the same time. Maybe they did but the Wright Brothers had a better publicity machine.

It also highlight's the global nature of progress. It was always there but just getting faster with each decade.

There is a memorial at Southborne

A memorial to Charles Rolls was unveiled on the 9th July and dedicated on 12th July, the actual centenary day of his death at the Bournemouth International Aviation Meeting.

The memorial is located in the St Peter's School playing fields at Southbourne, Bournemouth.
