A reply on the Barkston Heath thread prompted me to ask this question.

Is there a list anywhere of airfield ident letters, like you would find on / near the signals square?

We know that Barkston Heath is "BA" but there must be a list somewhere.

the controltower.co.uk website has a lot of them, not a list though you have to look at each airfields info.

There's are lists in Dave Smith's British Military Airfields, and Paul's Control Towers.

There was some duplication during WWII, but with many redundant airfields the codes were 'rationalized' c.1956.

Thus Strubby changed from 'NY' to 'SB', Gatwick (JL) became 'GK', and Aldergrove went from 'JV' to 'AL'

Just when common sense seemed to prevail, Bovingdon (BV) became 'ZZ', and Exeter (EX) became'JC'.

All perfectly clear, init!

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite
