UK Airfields- pre-ICAO Codes

From 1946(Exact date?) until introduction of the ICAO 4 letter designators on 1st March 1959, most (not all ?) UK airfields used a 4 letter system which conmmenced with G(Civil airfields) and M(military fields).

The use of these initial letters was in line with the UK's ITU allocation for Radio call signs....however at the moment it is not clear whether these codes were ever intended for use as callsigns on WT/CW(Morse) communications .For RT the airfield name(- or possibly a tactical callsign for military fields-) would have been used then just as nowadays.

Another query arising from these callsigns is that the allocations were in exactly the same style as marine callsigns .
UK vessels ,both civil and military had long been using 4 letter groups as WT/CW callsigns...again M or G for military and G for civil.
Were there any compromises of marine callsigns by the use of these combinations as airfield callsigns?

(A little added piece of useless info - until around 1948 the Royal Navy also used four letter groups commencing with B as WT callsigns- this ended when China was assigned exclusive use of "B")
