This picture is from RAF Chilbolton a few years ago, the owner of the site is repairing the whole area for offices, etc.

Takes longer than that to build a waiting room at West Hampstead Thameslink Station!
Makes you think doesn't it, with all the modern machinery around it seems to take somewhere between 6 months and 6 years to build anything these days. No chance of repeating that feat now.
I think the construction industry is taking us for a ride. They appear to have multiple jobs running but limited teams which is probably why I never saw anyone working on the M25/A2 workings during a week off last year. Someone moves the cones around to randomly closing off lanes for no apparent reason but no workmen in sight!
Really must start a proper rant thread!

Speaking of road construction there's a small roundabout being put in not far from where I live, its only about a 15ft wide, started 8 sept 08, its not even half done yet!!! what a joke.

The first photo is the Watch Office with Ops Room and Nissen briefing room annexe at either Alconbury or Grafton Underwood IIRC.
I can't remember the NARA reference number to check the caption though.

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!

Denis, was it the 850th Engineer Aviation Battalion who with the 825th and 817th built Stansted amongst other airfields? I only ask as the history of this unit was written up in AR No.66 by me dated August 1994 - just for interest!

No Paul, it was the complete wartime history of the 834th Engineer (Aviation) Battalion. They also won a Presidential Citation for building the first airstrip, whilst under fire on the Normandy beachhead.
