Lockheed F104 Starfighter was created by stevie
Well, being as we don't have a thread for the F104 yet, what better way to start one than with footage of Europe's only flying Starfighter which took to the skies for the first time since restoration a couple of days ago on September 28th from Bodo airbase in Norway.
Who knows wether the CAA will allow it to fly at UK airshows in the future but it would be great too see again. We haven't had a Starfighter display in the UK since the Italian Air Force withdrew their last aircraft from service.
First flight -
The whole first flight, those amazing howls the F104 make sound great at about 7 mins 42 secs onwards -

It's a long time since I heard those howls for real. I used to think it was the Starfighter sound that were used on a lot of TV shows. Also the the doppler effect as it shot past in front of you. Oddly our old Black & Decker industrial type vacuum cleaner made the same sound as you turned it off!
Now lets have a B-36 in the air again and the distinctive sounds of the fifties would be complete

The Canadian Starfighters team at Leicester in 1982, probably my fave display team of all time. They had several names over the years including 'Tiger Romeo' & the 'Red Indians' but stuck to just 'the Starfighters' in the early 80's. I'll never forget the noise more than anything else & the high speed passes by the solo aircraft (not in shot) which displayed without the tip tanks -
& who could forget the German Navy 'Vikings' duo( also at Leicester in 1985), one in the slow, one in the fast...Loved how they used to arrive from behind the audience making everybody jump before immediately breaking left & right in front of the crowd......Such a great team -

Did the commentator say "no they haven't finished they just have a turning circle the size of the Isle of Man"

That's why the Canadians had the solo aircraft to fill in the gaps while the other four where about 20 miles away turning back around again.
The German Vikings duo's display was made up of quite a lot of opposition manouvers. Quite a few fast individual solo passes from what I remember also....again..whilst the other team member crossed four counties to repositon back onto the display line .
