Black White underside - camouflage was created by SimonGee

During the beginning of WW2, many RAF fighters were painted half black & half white ( nose to tail line ) on the undersides. I understand this was to help any allied AA gunners to quickly recognise any friendly aircraft before they let loose. Is this true - ? I would have thought that in a situation of air superiority, as with the 'invasion stripes' in 1944, no problem, but in 1940 - ? Or is that why the scheme was dropped rather sharpish - ? ! :-D
