You may not have any direct interest in aviation history but I would like to bring to your attention that there is only one Hawker Hurricane still flying, which actually took part in the Battle of Britain. There are few enough of them anyway, so it is precious in other ways.

Hurricane R4118 is currently privately owned and lives near to me in south Oxfordshire. The chap who salvaged it, restored it to flyable condition and who has operated it for ten years has reluctantly put it up for sale and there is the distinct chance that it might be exported to the USA. This would be a very sad and regrettable loss.

I’m not asking for money but would appreciate it if you would sign the e-petition on the link below, which seeks to get the government stump up the really rather modest price and keep the ‘plane flying in the UK. The petition was written by someone else and appears to be perfectly safe and genuine.

If you can spare a few moments to forward this to aviation-minded friends, I’d be doubly grateful.

I was sent this earlier today.

I am always trying to find out more about these Hurricanes which were sent to Murmansk as my cousin's first husband, Frederick Anderson, was sent on the convoy with them as part of the RAF guard escort, so I was really interested in this; it is quite eerie to think that he may, in fact probably actually did, see this very aircraft!!

There have been two articles in Aeroplane magazine. The September 2007 issue contained A Biting North Wind about Russian Hurricanes while the September 2009 contained Red Star Rising about the recovery and restoration of a Canadian built Hurricane IIB,

They're now saying 'up to 17' on Flyer Forums (Help & Advice section; 'Not Spitfires in Burma' is the title)  having found 17 'plates' (presumably engine plates?)
