Sonic Boom was created by Peter Kirk
About 11:45 today (15/08/2025) we just had a nice and loud double sonic boom from a Typhoon at 40,000ft. Most recent booms have been a lot less noisy so I assume it must have gone supersonic close to the Essex/Kent border.
I wonder what it was for?

Sad really that the public at large are isolated from sonic booms which were not uncommon when I was a lad.
As with the upcoming national alarm, it would be beneficial if planned and executed days of 'sonic boom' were held a couple of times a year to familiarise the public with the sound to avoid undue alarm.
High altitude of course, must avoid cracking the NIBY's windows.

I checked on the distance a sonic boom could be heard and at 1 mile (approx.) for every 1,000ft meant 40 miles. Luckily sonic booms are quite distinctive and not the same as thunder or the crump of a bomb (IRA/Semtex?) or demolition charges (which are disappointingly quieter).
Not sure why it came as two booms very close together - doppler effect maybe?

One boom is created by the front of the aircraft, and one by the rear. The booms are close together and sometimes are heard as one.

I used to hear the double boom on occasions when Concorde was heading inbound to the UK above the Bristol Channel.
