It seems that Hampdens of 49 and 83 Squadron were used as night fighters in the Autumn of 1940. Running standing patrols they included an extra gunner and extra ammunition. It doesn't appear to have been used in anger, but I may have missed and entry when it was succusseful.
I wasn't aware of this happening or if it was only Hampdens that were used and only 49 and 83 squadrons. I assume Guy Gibson may have been involved in this "special" duty and may even have used the Dunholme submarine target referred to in another post.
