I have come across a reference to a Dornier seaplane being at Scottish Aviation, Greenock, during the early part of WW11. Do any members of the Group know if this is true? More information would be appreciated. robin bird
It did occur to me that, if the reference was contemporaneous and by a relatively unknowledgeable source, it could simply be that "Dornier" was a generic term for a german aircraft ( or in this case german seaplane), not a fighter...
Not quite "That Fokker was a messerschmitt", but you get the idea I'm sure .....
This is a possible lead to Greenock which I will look into. An Arado from the Hipper was flown to Helensburgh, where it crashed. That's where the Dornier should have gone, me thinks, unless at was at Greenock and Scottish Aviation enroute
I now believe that a Dornier 18 flying boat was never at Greenock. One of the Helensburgh Heinkels was most likely mistaken for or believed to be Dornier as both aircraft were generally unknown quantities. The Heinkel 115 while at Scottish Aviation Greenock would have also been subject to security, so rumours that there was a captured Dornier at Greenock could have easily started.
