With the help of Sen. William Jenner and Rep. Noble Johnson, a train-load of obsolete military supplies were donated to the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) chapter. The V-1 was chosen to stand out and was prepped for exhibition. A pair of Japanese guns were also put on display in front of the VFW. The rest of the items remain unaccounted for.
This one should be Captured Enemy Equipment (CEE)#113178 and Fi 103 A-1 and was shipped to Greencastle in 1948 gifted by the US Navy (quite right; what would they want it for!). A Greencastle resident J Frank Durham was involved.
The nose section is suspect but the rest of the airframe and engine is supposedly genuine. They did acquire a second F1 103 Re 4 (CEE 113782) also from the USN but it was in poor condition and scrapped.
Our Bomb Disposal Flight at Debden (mid '60s) had a collection of German munitions including a Heinkel HS 293 guided bomb. I recall taking the lot to Biggin Hill for Battle of Britain Day (probably September 1964) travelling in a 3ton Bedford through central London and entertaining the upper deck passengers of London buses with ourload. We also had a Fritz X glide bomb. They must be in museum collections by now.
Someone at Tain made a replica of a V1. They took a concrete 1000lb bomb and stuck some fins on it and it did look like a V1, I wonder if its still there?
There is a report that on December 24th 1944 a V1 rocket landed without exploding near Holywell in Flintshire. It does appear that 45 He111s had launched V1s at Manchester (31 reached their target) while flying off the East Coast near Hull.
Does anyone have further information on this incident?
There is an excellent book "Flying Bombs over the Pennines - The story of the V-1 attack aimed at Manchester on December 24th 1944" by Peter JC Smith , A4 size with card covers , 1988 , published by Neil Richardson , ISBN 978-185216-029-6 .
It lists 30 known sites were these rockets fell and the closest to Holywell would be Kelsall near Chester , one of six rockets/bombs to fall on Cheshire .
